The recent announcement by the Illinois Department of Transportation that the corridor for the North-South highway
linking Routes 80 and 88 and running through Kane and Kendall counties has been set is a disappointment to thousands
of citizens in Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties who support the preservation of farmland and the environment.
The "Prairie Parkway," or "Hastert's Disaster" as folks around here call it, if not stopped
by legal action, will gobble up thousands of acres of prime farmland for the highway, then the resulting housing
developments and strip malls will greatly speed up the westward sprawl that accompanies these projects.
Dennis Hastert, using the power of the office of speaker of the House, obtained federal funding and has spearheaded
this project for years, in spite of great opposition by citizens in the area. He places the interests of business
and developers ahead of the interests of all others. Despite the fact that Hastert's district is about 75 percent
rural, he has one of the worst voting records in Congress on farming and environmental issues.
Hastert is out of touch with the people of the district, and it's time to vote him out of office. Larry Quick,
Democratic candidate for the 14th Congressional District, would be an excellent replacement.
