SANDWICH ó The Sandwich City Council this week voted to support the proposed outer-belt highway through western
Kane and Kendall counties.
The council resolution says the city approves having the Illinois Department of Transportation set a centerline
for the highway, known as the Prairie Parkway, that would link interstates 88 and 80.
The council said the surrounding area, especially to the east, would benefit from the limited access north-south
freeway.
In other action, the council approved the placement of large signs to welcome visitors to the city. The signs
will be posted at the east and west entrances to the city on Route 34.
The 4-foot by 8-foot signs were designed by artist Quen Carpenter of Plano, and will be made and installed by
Designs and Signs by Anderson, of Ottawa, at a cost of $9,570. The city will buy three signs, putting one in storage
in case it is needed in the future.
The council voted to waive fees and give free water and electricity to vendors who will participate in next summer's
Sandwich Freedom Days Celebration. The Freedom Days event will be held July 5-7 in the gazebo area of the business
district.
The council's Committee of the Whole will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the city hall annex. It will discuss increasing
the water-sewer rates.
