Letter to Editor: Price of Hastert's "Legacy"

If Mr. Hastert wants to leave a legacy behind when he is out of office and gone, at what cost should the rest of us have to pay for such a legacy? Is his legacy worth our jobs, lives, homes and families? Or does he need to be awakened to the selfishness of his desire and face the piper for his actions?

This past holiday season, our family watched a favorite classic Christmas movie. The movie really had a significant meaning to us this year; especially after what Mr. Hastert and other officials are trying to do to Kane and Kendall counties, Big Rock Township to be specific!

Mr. Hastert and the other officials need to watch the video, Bishop's Wife. In short, the Bishop is doing everything he can to get 'the Cathedral' built. Even if it is an unnecessary, costly monument. In his attempt to get his Cathedral for all the people built, he alienates those around him. Those who would gain the most from such a wasteful project influence him. He learns a hard lesson, by a visitor named Dudley, that the money could be put to better use by helping those in need.

Just like the Bishop, Mr. Hastert is alienating those people who have elected him to represent, help and support them. It's Mr. Hastert's bid to build a his monstrosity of a highway (his legacy) for all the people. But Mr. Hastert appears to be led astray, maybe by some who would gain by such a wasteful project. He doesn't seem to want to hear the cry of those in need. He just hears the voices of those who would gain from this endeavor. Even though the people of Kane/Kendall county do not want it, his coercion keeps throwing it back into the IDOT arena.

So it is up to us, the Kane County voters, to have our voices heard. Like Dudley, we must give Mr. Hastert some guidance, and open his eyes to the selfishness of this proposal ó a proposal that is unfounded, unwarranted and a travesty, one that in the end would cause more harm than good. He needs to be shown that the money could be put to better use than to destroy unincorporated farmland.

Unless someone in a position with influence can stop the railroading of this proposal and look into what devastating affects this could have on the people, land and county, the rights of all landowners (whether they are civil rights, state rights or constitutional rights) will have been null and void by either a handful of officials or one official. To lock up the corridor would devastate families. Who would willingly buy land or a home knowing that in the future it would be destroyed ó destroyed by uncaring political bureaucrats, for their own 10 minutes of fame at the cost of Kane and Kendall county families and farmers?

So to all the officials involved in the proposed sprawlway/highway, I urge you to SAY 'NO' to this proposal. Do not let the Kane or Kendall county lands be desecrated by this monstrosity of a highway. And to all Kane and Kendall county voters, send IDOT and your political reps the same message: "NO to the proposed sprawlway!"

Keep our farmland secure and pure for future generations to come. Let them see the beauty and pureness of true farmland, as well as benefit from the food grown for years to come.
